Move up from lawn tractor

When my 20 year old 1000 series Cub needed major deck and front end overhauling I researched compact tractors, cringed and spent roughly twice as much on a Cub replacement by moving up to a Deere 1023E. I've had it for two seasons in the Northeast and simply can say it's the best equipment purchase
...
I have ever made. While no tractor can be the best at everything, the 1023E can perform a wide range of lawn and landscape tasks extremely well. I configured mine with the smallest bucket and deck available for the tight areas in my yard. The small deck enables fairly high speed mowing which makes up for its size. Also by accident or design the deck almost never has a heavy grass build up below. Clean-ups are minimal. A few things could use improvement. The hood does not open wide. Oil changes are messy because of tight access. I machined a bolt on power-lever extension that is swept forward for easier and precise throttle movements. All of these issues are minor though. Lastly and most importantly, Deere equipment retains its value better than any other brand. I would recommend this tractor to anyone with a one to eight acre yard.
